Cleaned, Categorized and Sorted

One Plastic Beach from ANIMAL | ON EST MAL on Vimeo.

Richard Lang and Judith Selby Lang have been collecting plastic debris off one beach in Northern California for over ten years. Each piece of plastic Richard and Judith pick up comes back to their house, where it gets cleaned, categorized and stored before being used for their art. The couple make sculptures, prints, jewelry and installations with the plastic they find washed up, raising a deeper concern with the problem of plastic pollution in our seas.

The SFMOMA Artists Gallery’s Windows venue will show the work of Judith Selby-Lang and Richard Lang from November 26 thru June 1, 2011. SFMOMA Garage Windows are located at street level 147 Minna and 150 Natoma St. (between Third and New Montgomery Sts.)

  1. Indifference is indeed the ruination of the planet. We must stop the indiscriminate use of plastic....the gyre is almost overpowering in the size, the ugliness, the killing power for the birds and ocean life in general. By juxtaposing the pieces of plastic into new and fascinating combinations the artistic creations allow us to see at least some reason for using the horrible residual effects of plastic for something surprising and beautiful. At least a 2nd use more impressive than the 1st?
